Magnifique Diplôme d'Honneur de la République française décerné à la mémoire de Thomas Augustine Ring, Boatswain's Mate First Class de la U.S. Naval Reserve Force, décédé en service le 14 février 1918 durant la Première Guerre mondiale.
Ancien pompier du Boston Fire Department, Thomas Ring s'enrôle dans la Marine américaine en 1917, peu après l'entrée en guerre des États-Unis. Affecté à bord du USS America, un ancien paquebot allemand transformé en transport de troupes, il participe aux premières traversées transatlantiques du navire dans le cadre de l'effort de guerre allié.
Les archives militaires américaines indiquent qu'il décède des suites de graves blessures ("Multiple injuries") au Naval Hospital de Norfolk, en Virginie. Après la guerre, la République française rend hommage à son sacrifice en remettant à sa famille ce magnifique diplôme portant la mention :
« Mort pour la Liberté pendant la Grande Guerre – Hommage de la France »
Le document présente une riche composition allégorique illustrant la Victoire, des figures militaires ainsi que les drapeaux français et américain. Il est toujours conservé dans son cadre d'époque.

Beautiful French Republic Honor Diploma awarded in memory of Thomas Augustine Ring, Boatswain's Mate First Class in the U.S. Naval Reserve Force, who died in service on February 14, 1918, during the First World War.
Formerly a firefighter with the Boston Fire Department, Thomas Ring enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1917, shortly after America's entry into the war. Assigned to the USS America, the former German ocean liner converted into a troop transport, he took part in the vessel's early transatlantic wartime voyages supporting the Allied war effort.
Official U.S. military records state that he died from multiple injuries at the Naval Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. Following the war, the French Republic honored his sacrifice by presenting his family with this beautiful diploma bearing the inscription:
"Died for Liberty during the Great War – Tribute from France."
The diploma features an elaborate allegorical composition depicting Victory, military figures, and the French and American flags. It remains preserved in its original period frame.
