Autographe original de Richard E. Cole (1915-2019), copilote de Jimmy Doolittle lors du célèbre Doolittle Raid du 18 avril 1942.
Cette pièce est constituée d'une page illustrée consacrée au Doolittle Raid, personnellement signée et annotée par Richard E. Cole, alors Second Lieutenant et copilote de l'équipage no 1, commandé par le lieutenant-colonel Jimmy Doolittle.
L'inscription manuscrite indique :
"2nd Lt. R.E. Cole – 34th Sqd. – Copilot Crew #1 – Tokyo – Bailed out over China – 18 April 1942."
Cette annotation résume directement sa participation à l'une des opérations les plus audacieuses de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Le 18 avril 1942, seize bombardiers B-25 Mitchell décollèrent du porte-avions USS Hornet afin de frapper plusieurs objectifs au Japon, dont Tokyo. Après la mission, l'équipage fut contraint de s'éjecter au-dessus de la Chine, faute de carburant.
Richard E. Cole poursuivit sa carrière militaire après la guerre et demeura le dernier survivant des Doolittle Raiders jusqu'à son décès en 2019.

Original autograph of Richard E. Cole (1915–2019), co-pilot of Jimmy Doolittle during the famous Doolittle Raid of April 18, 1942.
This piece consists of an illustrated page depicting the Doolittle Raid, personally signed and inscribed by Richard E. Cole, then a Second Lieutenant and co-pilot of Crew No. 1, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle.
The handwritten inscription reads:
"2nd Lt. R.E. Cole – 34th Sqd. – Copilot Crew #1 – Tokyo – Bailed out over China – 18 April 1942."
The inscription directly summarizes Cole's role in one of the most daring operations of the Second World War. On April 18, 1942, sixteen B-25 Mitchell bombers launched from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet to strike targets across Japan, including Tokyo. After completing the mission, the crew was forced to bail out over China after running out of fuel.
Richard E. Cole continued his military career after the war and remained the last surviving Doolittle Raider until his passing in 2019.
