Official U.S. Army press photograph dating from 1944, depicting soldiers of the 1st U.S. Army taking cover behind a hedge in a heavily damaged German village during the Battle of Aachen. Taken in October 1944, the image captures the American advance toward the first major city of the Reich to be captured by Allied forces following intense urban combat and determined German resistance. The reverse retains its original typed caption describing the gradual encirclement of Aachen, along with an official military censorship marking confirming approval for public release by Allied authorities. An original period 8 × 10 inch press print, this photograph is an authentic historical record of the fierce fighting in Germany and the transition of Allied forces into large-scale urban warfare on German soil.
