Sabre réglementaire français d’officier d’infanterie modèle 1882, fabriqué à la Manufacture d’armes de Saint-Étienne durant la Troisième République. Adopté en 1882, ce modèle est devenu l’un des sabres d’officier français les plus emblématiques de la période précédant la Première Guerre mondiale.
L’arme présente la configuration classique du modèle avec sa lame droite à double gouttière, conçue selon les doctrines militaires de la fin du XIXe siècle privilégiant l’estoc. La monture en laiton comprend une garde à trois branches avec plateau asymétrique conforme au règlement. La poignée conserve son gainage de cuir d’origine ainsi que son filigrane en laiton.
Le dos de la lame porte encore une inscription de manufacture partiellement visible correspondant à la Manufacture d’armes de Saint-Étienne, tandis que plusieurs poinçons d’inspection demeurent présents au ricasso, attestant une production militaire officielle. Un numéro frappé sur la monture est également visible.
La lame conserve une belle patine ancienne avec quelques traces d’oxydation légère compatibles avec son âge. Les gouttières et les lignes de la lame demeurent bien définies, démontrant l’absence de polissage excessif au cours de sa vie.
Particularité notable, l’exemplaire présente un bris ancien à l’extrémité de la lame ainsi qu’un dommage à la garde. Ces altérations semblent anciennes et pourraient résulter d’un choc important ou d’un événement survenu durant sa période d’utilisation. Bien qu’il soit impossible d’en déterminer la cause exacte, ces dommages contribuent au caractère vécu de la pièce.
Le modèle 1882 fut porté par les officiers français durant les années précédant la Grande Guerre et au cours des premiers mois du conflit avant que le rôle du sabre ne devienne progressivement plus cérémoniel.
État : Bon état général. Patine d’origine conservée, marquages partiellement visibles, usure cohérente avec l’âge. Bris ancien à la pointe de la lame et dommage à la garde.

French Model 1882 Infantry Officer’s Sword manufactured by the Manufacture d’armes de Saint-Étienne during the French Third Republic. Adopted in 1882, this pattern became one of the most recognizable French officer’s swords of the pre-First World War era.
The sword retains the characteristic straight double-fullered blade designed in accordance with late nineteenth-century military doctrine emphasizing thrusting weapons. The brass hilt features the regulation three-bar guard with asymmetrical guard plate. The grip retains its original leather covering and brass wire wrap.
The spine of the blade still shows a partially legible manufacturer’s inscription attributable to the Manufacture d’armes de Saint-Étienne, while inspection stamps remain visible at the ricasso, confirming official military production. A stamped assembly or inventory number is also present on the hilt.
The blade displays an attractive age patina with light oxidation consistent with long-term storage and use. The blade geometry and fullers remain well defined, indicating that the sword has not been aggressively polished.
A notable feature of this example is an old break at the blade tip as well as damage to the guard. These alterations appear to be period in nature and may have resulted from a significant impact during its service life. While the exact cause cannot be determined, they add character and authenticity to the piece.
The Model 1882 was carried by French officers in the years leading up to the First World War and during the opening stages of the conflict before swords gradually became primarily ceremonial weapons.
Condition: Good overall condition. Original patina preserved, markings partially visible, and wear consistent with age. Old damage to the blade tip and guard.
